Drug Channels Review of Preferred Network Participation in 2019

Jan 04, 2019
It’s that time of year again–time for Adam Fein’s annual update on independent preferred network trends. You can find the article here: The Law of Holes: Some Independents Skip 2019 Part D Preferred Pharmacy Networks
The theme of Fein’s article this year is “The Law of Holes” – i.e. if you find yourself in a hole, stop digging. He applies it to Part D participation and wonders if independents are digging themselves deeper by participating in more plans at the preferred cost-share level. He notes Elevate, AmerisourceBergen's PSAO for independent community pharmacies, is as an outlier (for the second year in a row, thanks to our data-driven approach!) for our limited participation in preferred networks. Fein even dedicated a section to Elevate in this year’s post and notes that our 2019 status was a deliberate and strategic choice. As a follow-up to that, he included the following from our response to his annual request for information:
“Overwhelmingly, the data is validating our belief that independent community pharmacies have highly loyal patients who are willing to overlook a copay differential, if there is one, because of their profound relationships, customer service and the quality care they provide.”
